Franziska studied history and theater studies in Munich and Bochum. In 2009 she completed her PhD, which focused on German scientific expeditions that described and mapped Central Asia between 1890 and 1930. After her postdoc at the Rachel Carson Center from 2009 to 2012, she was a John F. Kennedy Memorial Fellow at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies, Harvard University (2012–2013).
