Matjaž Pinter is a visual and political anthropologist (PhD) with an interest in political ecology. His research interests include the study of subaltern resistance, revolutionary subjectivity, and contemporary peasant movements at the fringes of capitalism. Matjaž’s research is based on a three-year project (2017–20) of ethnographic fieldwork in Mid-Western Nepal focusing on the history of peasant uprisings that led to the Maoist revolution in 1996. During his doctoral research, Matjaž produced four ethnographic films that have been screened at international ethnographic and documentary film festivals: Takasera (2016), Disenchanted Cinema (2017), Taking on the Storm (2021), and Mushroom at the Top of the World (2021). The latter film explores the economy of mushroom collecting with a focus on the rare Ophiocordyceps sinensis, also known as caterpillar fungus, and the increasing inequalities and transforming power relations in rural Nepal. Matjaž collaborates with the German International Ethnographic Film Festival (GIEFF).
