Martiné van der Walt studied environmental science at the University of Pretoria, where she also explored the selection of native plants to improve urban ecosystem functions in Tshwane, culminating in a research-based master's degree in landscape architecture. She also pursued an education qualification and taught at a high school (secondary school). Thereafter, she spent many years working in the tertiary sector as a lecturer. Her academic journey reflects a growing interest in ecology, sustainable development, and environmental education—an interest she now aims to deepen through the environmental humanities/Anthropogeography.
