Lara Lopez

Encountering deep inequities while growing up in Manila, Philippines, has driven Lara Lopez’s interest in the quality of life and social equity manifestations of sustainable urbanization. In 2018, she was granted the Australia Awards scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in urban and regional planning at the University of Sydney. For her thesis, she conducted a GIS-based analysis of census data to understand patterns of socio-spatial concentrations of advantage and disadvantage in Greater Sydney. She then continued to explore how climate-resilience policies foster (or reduce) social equity during her master's studies in city resilience design and management at UIC Barcelona International University of Catalonia. Lara joined the Doctoral Program Environment and Society at the Rachel Carson Center in April 2022 to gain a deeper understanding of social-ecological spatial politics.

Prior to joining the RCC, Lara worked as an urban planner and infrastructure consultant for various government agencies in the Philippines, Australia, Japan, and Spain.
