After studies of geography at LMU and the University of Maryland, Julia Pongratz received her PhD on the early Anthropocene from the University of Hamburg in 2009. After a postdoc in Stanford, she led an Emmy-Noether research group on land management at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. In 2018, she moved to LMU as professor of physical geography and land use systems. Currently, she is also the director of the Department of Geography. She has contributed to various IPCC Assessment Reports, coordinates the land-use emissions estimates in the Global Carbon Budget, serves on the Board of Reviewing Editors at Science Magazine, chairs the research program on Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDRterra), advices the German government as part of the Scientific Advisory Board on Nature-based Solutions, and serves on Germany’s Council of Experts on Climate Change. Her work has received numerous awards, including the Otto Hahn Medal of the Max Planck Society, the Wladimir Peter Köppen Prize of the University of Hamburg, and three Teaching Innovations Awards of LMU. She is Clarivate “Highly Cited Researcher” and member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and the Leopoldina/National Academy of Sciences.
