Robert Emmett is Director of Academic Programs at the RCC. He completed a B.A. in English (Modern Studies) and French at the University of Virginia and received an M.A. and PhD in English from UW-Madison. Before joining the Rachel Carson Center in 2013, Emmett taught as a visiting assistant professor of literature at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. His research interests include American environmental writing, memoir, digital media, the protest novel, urban ecology, and environmental histories of extraction zones. His forthcoming monograph, Cultivating Environmental Justice: A Literary History of U.S. Garden Writing, will appear with the University of Massachusetts Press in the spring 2016. His work has also appeared in RCC Perspectives, Environmental Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment. At present he is working on a co-authored critical introduction to the environmental humanities (under advance contract) and an edited volume on objects for a cabinet of curiosities for the Anthropocene, resulting from a special collection exhibited as part of the Deutsches Museum's Welcome to the Anthropocene exhibit.
As Director of Academic Programs, Robert coordinates the doctoral program Environment and Society and helps to develop and facilitate various strategic partnerships, including the European-funded Marie Curie network in Environmental Humanities, ENHANCE ITN. He serves as the co-convener for RCC events and workshops and represents the RCC at conferences and events around the world, while also supporting the RCC in fundraising and grant-writing.
