Thom van Dooren is a senior lecturer in environmental humanities at the University of New South Wales in Australia and co-editor of the international, open-access journal Environmental Humanities (Duke University Press). His current research and writing focus on some of the many philosophical, ethical, cultural, and political issues that arise in the context of species extinctions. These themes are explored in a sustained manner in his second book Flight Ways: Life and Loss at the Edge of Extinction (Columbia University Press, 2014). Van Dooren completed his BA Honours degree at the Australian National University (ANU), in 2003, and his PhD in the Fenner School of Environment and Society, also at the ANU, in 2007. His background is in environmental philosophy and anthropology. He has held postdoctoral positions at the University of Technology Sydney and the University of Hull (UK) and visiting positions at the University of California at Santa Cruz, USA (2005, 2010) and the KTH Environmental Humanities Laboratory in Stockholm (2014). He is currently a Humboldt Research Fellow at theRachel Carson Center.
