Reinhold Reith teaches economic and social history in the Department of History at Salzburg University. He studied history and political science at the University of Constance, where he completed his PhD in 1987. He was afterward involved in a range of research projects, and in 1989 he became an assistant professor and lecturer at the Institute for the History of Technology and Science at the Technical University in Berlin, a post he held until 1999. In 1999 he was made Chair of Economic and Social History at Salzburg University, and in 2007 he became head of the department. His main research and teaching interests lie in the area of economic and social history, concerning in particular environmental history and the history of technology.
