Bowen Gu is a PhD researcher at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, Autonomous University of Barcelona (ICTA-UAB) and a member of the Global Atlas of Environmental Justice (EJAtlas.org) team. Her research focuses on coal and environmental justice in China and the Belt and Road Initiative, with a focus on Indonesia. As part of her PhD, Bowen conducted fieldwork at coal frontiers along the Yellow River in China in 2021, which inspired her project for the RCC Landhaus fellowship. Prior to starting her doctorate, Bowen worked in sustainable investment and corporate engagement on environmental, social, and global health topics. A recipient of the German Chancellor Fellowship, she conducted research on the European sustainable investment ecosystem. She received her undergraduate degree in mathematics and physics from Tsinghua University in China and her master’s degree from the Erasmus Mundus program in environmental sciences, policy, and management (MESPOM). Building on her research project, Bowen aims to contribute to the environmental and climate justice debate with grounded perspectives from China and the Global South.
