After the Crisis? Rethinking Processes and Potentials of Change in Environment and Society
Methodological Workshop in cooperation with the University of Heidelberg
22.07.2022 – 23.07.2022
Date: 22–23 July 2022
Location: Seidl Villa, Munich
Conveners: Christof Mauch (RCC), Barbara Mittler (Universität Heidelberg)
Crises and catastrophes—and the ongoing pandemic is just one example—prompt us to reconsider the relationship between humans and nature. While catastrophic events entail danger and destruction, they also provide opportunities for change and transformation. Against this background, our workshop investigates the action potential in moments of crisis. Scholars from a variety of different disciplines, such as history, law, literary studies or the environmental humanities, will investigate different strategies (e.g., journalistic, propagandistic) and narratives (e.g., artistic or statistical) employed to put transformative visions in spite and after a crisis into practice—both in the past and the present.
This workshop, which will bring together project members, fellows and graduate students from Munich and Heidelberg, will engage in reading-in-conjunction sessions of sources and objects from different regions and time frames, fostering an interdisciplinary dialogue. In addition, participants will engage in joint reading sessions on the state of the field.
