The twenty-first-century planet is an urban planet. The urban population in 2015 accounted for 54% of the total global population, up from 30% in 1950. It is expected to increase to 60% of the world population by 2030. Wherever we look on the globe, growing cities are facing environmental and social challenges, and we can find a plethora of policy initiatives that seek to create “greener,” more “sustainable,” and more “resilient” cities for the future. This workshop brings together fellows of the Rachel Carson Center (RCC), scholars from LMU Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München) and two of its partner universities—Cambridge and New York University—alongside members of Munich’s Technical University and urban “practitioners” to understand and analyze urban ecologies and planning as well as biophysical transformation over time. The workshop is designed as a multi-disciplinary project with anthropologists and architects, environmental historians and geographers, ecologist and urban planners. It includes an urban field excursion, keynote lectures by the head of Munich’s planning office and others, and a sneak-peak event featuring Ecopolis Munich (an exhibition of the RCC’s Environmental Studies Certificate Program).
The workshop takes place in Munich’s Werksviertel: a trendy and futuristic quarter on the grounds of a former potato factory that combines underground culture, modern living, beehives and sheep on the roof. At the end of the program, a new project of the RCC—the “Initiative in Urban Environments of the Rachel Carson Center” will be officially launched.
