Tuesday Discussion with Carolin Maertens (Contours)

30.01.2024 16:30  – 17:45

Location: Rachel Carson Center, fourth floor, Conference Room, Leopoldstr. 11a, 80802 Munich, Germany

This Tuesday, Carolin Maertens (Contours) will present two years of ethnographic and historical research in the former coal-mining area and chemical-industrial hub around Bitterfeld-Wolfen in Eastern Germany. Infamous for extreme air pollution and environmental destruction, the region has become a destination for recreation and nature-based tourism over the past 30 years, and, more recently, an asset for illegal real estate development as well as a stronghold for right-wing populism. Maertens will touch upon the layered histories of extraction, pollution, and transformation, which have resulted in a complex set of legacies that continue to shape landscapes, lives, and politics in the region today.

The Tuesday Discussions are free and open to the public.
