Former Carson Fellow and former member of the RCC’s International Academic Advisory board Prof. Dr. Shen Hou will give a talk, titled “Cities by the Sea: Comparing Urbanization on the Pacific Rim, Qingdao and Los Angeles.” Qingdao and Los Angeles are two cities located on two sides of the Pacific Rim. Why did they, radically different in cultural origins, come to resemble each other in size, cityscape, and perhaps even in temperament?

Hou is professor of environmental history at Peking University (PKU), Beijing, China, and the deputy director of the Center for Ecological History, Renmin University of China. She has previously been published in Springs: The Rachel Carson Center Review with an article titled “Cities by the Sea: A Tale of Qingdao and Los Angeles.”
