When Monkeys Rise Up

SPEAK4Nature Seminar

17.09.2024 12:00  – 13:00

Location: conference room, fourth floor, RCC

Presenter: Lena Köhn (LMU)

The constitutional verdict on the Ecuadorean monkey in captivity, Estrellita, has attracted worldwide attention: Are animals and other individuals protected by the rights of nature in the Ecuadorean Constitution? If so, what are the implications for conflicting human rights? In other words, can monkeys claim their rights in court and file a lawsuit against their private owners or a zoo? The constitutional court of Ecuador believes so.

In this session, we will examine the post-humanist approach of the constitutional court in his decision Mona Estrellita. It will also be interesting to take a closer look at the enforcement of the constitutional judgment: An animal protection law, that is currently debated in the Ecuadorean parliament.

This is a seminar within the series “Environmental Law: Current Discussion,” which is open to anyone interested. Feel free to bring your lunch.

The series is a part of the EU-funded project Speak4Nature.

If you are intersted in the topic, you can, for example, read up on the Estrellita case at Verfassungsblog or ReVista.
