Amnesty International's Human Rights Award is being presented this year to the Colombian organization FEDEPESAN (Federation of Artisanal Fishermen of Santander), based in Barrancabermeja, Colombia.
We would like to invite you to a conversation with Yuly Velásquez. She is a fisherwoman and president of FEDEPESAN, a self-organized local association for traditional fishing, environmental protection, and tourism in Barrancabermeja.
For generations, the tropical river landscape in the central Colombian region of Magdalena Medio has been a source of drinking water, home to manatees and turtles, and has sustained hundreds of fishing families. Now, this life-giving ecosystem is in danger. The organization reports that fossil fuel companies are polluting the region's water with refinery waste and oil leaks. The largest refinery in Colombia is located in Barrancabermeja, operated by Colombia's largest oil company—but the corporation denies any responsibility.
