The Struggles of Saving a Mussel: Unglamorous Conservation

ContoursTalks series

29.03.2022 16:00  – 18:00

Time: 29th March, 2022

Location: Rachel Carson Center, Conference Room (4th floor), Leopoldstr. 11A, 80802 Munich.

Freshwater pearl mussel—for locals a "communal secret"—is an endangered species in Estonia with numbers being in decline since the nineteenth century due to direct and indirect anthropological causes. In this talk, Helen Vaaks will show the personal connection people have established with an otherwise unnoticeable mollusk, the different attitudes to its conservation, and the uncertain feelings about the future environment.
