Abstract:

Rio de Janeiro's rivers are more than just part of the city's scenery. They work endlessly to bring nutrients, make industrial and domestic life viable, and they often hide, buried underground or repressed by rigid canal walls. And sometimes they remind us of their existence, in floods or droughts. Studies of the city of Rio de Janeiro in the 20th century should uncover these multiple roles of urban rivers, organic machines that are important arteries of urban nature. (This research is a partnership with Dr. Bruno Capilé, and is also part of the new ImagineRio narratives / Rice University).
