Paul Josephson on "Giving Atoms Agency: Toward a Global Nuclear Environmental History"

Online Lecture

12.04.2021 16:00  – 17:30

Paul Josephson (Colby College, USA) will present on "Giving Atoms Agency: Toward a Global Nuclear Environmental History."

Different from delivery of a paper of findings, this talk will present the focus, approach and methodological questions arising from an ongoing multi-year project to produce a Global Nuclear Environmental History. We are investigating how understandings of the human-nature-atom interface have changed since ca. 1945. We shall enrich this investigation by considering this interface among a variety of actors; in a variety of settings, climates and geographies; in different communities, institutions, organizations and agencies; among individuals who are engaged in the nuclear world in a variety of ways; and whose experiences in the nuclear world range from active participants to "downwinders," indigenes and others removed from their homes and homelands, and still others living in contaminated environments. Our focus is North America, Europe, the former Soviet Union, and East Asia. We are gathering rich primary and secondary sources, and extending the scope of those sources to include the environmental humanities. Of course, preliminary findings will be presented.

Please register via a.walther@deutsches-museum.de (by 9 April 2021). You will then receive the zoom link to join the online lecture.

The lecture is part of the joint Oberseminar of the Research Institute of the Deutsches Museum and the Professorship of History of Technology of the TUM School of Education.
