Tom Princen on "Extreme Events: Seeds of Transition?"

TUM Climate Talk Series

08.02.2019 14:00  – 16:00

Location: Hochschule für Politik München, B. 262, Richard Wagner Str. 1

Natural disasters, or extreme events, are creating a “new normal”—unprecedented, unmanageable. What are the politics, especially of long-term societal adaptation? Thomas Princen uses events from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twenty-first centuries to argue that opportunities for positive transition can be found in such events. A primary opportunity is a cultural shift from humans dominating natural systems to humans living with natural systems. From this, new language, humility, and acceptance can emerge.

Prof. Princen's talk on “Extreme Events: Seeds of Transition?” is part of the Climate Talk Series and is hosted by Prof. Miranda Schreurs, chair of environmental and climate policy at TUM.
