Sea of Shadows

DOK.fest Movie Screening

13.05.2019 18:00  – 21:00

Location: Riofilmpalast (Rosenheimer Str. 46, 81669 München)

Director: Richard Ladkani.

Jacques Cousteau once described the marine ecosystem in the Gulf of California, Mexico, as “the world’s aquarium.” Now it is on the brink of destruction, thanks to large-scale illegal poaching of the endangered totoaba fish, also known as the “cocaine of the sea.” Local drug cartels sell totoaba swim bladders to the Chinese mafia for large sums of money. Now the authorities, the military, journalists, and environmental activists are fighting back. At stake is the survival of the mysterious and elusive vaquita porpoise—the world’s smallest whale. Fishing nets intended to trap the totoaba also trap vaquitas, often killing them. With breathtaking images and investigative flair, director Richard Ladkani tells the story of the international team of scientists, conservationists, and undercover agents who put their lives on the line to save the last remaining vaquitas.

The movie Sea of Shadows will be screened as part of DOK.fest 2019. It will be followed by a high-profile panel discussion with film director Richard Ladkani, marine veterinarian Cynthia Smith (Executive Director of the US National Marine Mammal Foundation), environmental historian Franziska Torma (Rachel Carson Center), environmental activist Franziska Güpner (Sea Shepherd Conservation Society), and marine biologist and filmmaker Hans Fricke. It will be moderated by RCC director Christof Mauch.
