Agroecology in Bavaria

Field Seminar

24.06.2019

Location: Hermannsdorfer Landwerkstätten Eco-Farm, Glonn, Germany

Conveners: Christof Mauch (RCC), Karl Schweinsfurt (Hermannsdorfer Landwerkstätten)

This field seminar offers an intensive look at a local eco-agricultural project, Hermannsdorfer Landwerkstätten. Hermannsdorfer was designed to bring together farmers, laborers, and sellers and to revive the vanishing skills of craftspersons such as brewers, bakers, butchers, distillers, and cheesemakers. The farm was founded by Karl Ludwig Schweisfurth, who sold one of Europe’s largest meat production companies in the 1980s and focused instead on a type of agriculture that is inspired by the motto “Life and Work in Greater Harmony with Nature.”

The seminar will include a tour of the premises, as well as discussions on the challenges of eco-agricultural farming, the sustainability of organic meat, and other methods of producing food. It will also touch on environmental debates in Bavaria, including the recent referendum on ''saving the bees.''
