Joana Gaspar de Freitas on "Against the Sand and the Sea: The Dunes in Coastal Defense Strategies"

Lunchtime Colloquium

25.06.2015 12:00  – 14:00

Location: Katholische Hochschulgemeinde (KHG), Leopoldstr. 11, 1st Floor

Joana Gaspar de Freitas (Universidade Nova de Lisboa) will present on "Against the Sand and the Sea: The Dunes in Coastal Defense Strategies."

Because of their ecological, economic, recreational and aesthetic value and relevance as natural defenses against sea flooding, dunes are now protected environments. But this has not always been the case. For centuries dunes were considered unproductive and dangerous. Thus, thousands of hectares of sandy areas were converted into green pine forests. This talk looks at the changes in dune management, as well as the various actors, economic and political interests, and forms of knowledge that make up this entangled history of coastal environments.

The Lunchtime Colloquium is free and open to the public.

Snacks are served at 12:00; the lecture starts at 12:30.
