Markus Wilczek on "When Our Future Is at Stake: A Poetics of Radioactivity"

Lunchtime Colloquium

31.07.2014 12:00  – 14:00

Location: Katholische Hochschulgemeinde (KHG), Leopoldstr. 11

Markus Wilczek (Tufts University) will present on "When Our Future Is at Stake: A Poetics of Radioactivity."

Focusing on radioactivity, this talk elaborates on the link between aesthetic representation and the longevity of “hyperobjects” (Nixon). In case studies from different aesthetic domains—two documentary films (Michael Madsen’s Into Eternity and Volker Sattel’s Under Control), one work of literature (Christa Wolf’s Accident), and one music performance (Kraftwerk’s “Radioactivity”)—the talk claims that only the aesthetic engagement with “hyperobjects” prepares us for a reflection on the status of materials that will outlive us all.

The Lunchtime Colloquium is free and open to the public.

Snacks are served at 12:00; the lecture starts at 12:30.
