Eagle Glassheim on "Teaching Climate Change"

Climate Discussion Group

24.04.2012 at 12:30

Location: RCC Conference Room, Leopoldstr. 11a

This discussion will take a different view on the history, politics, and culture of climate (change): a view from the classroom, so to speak. Carson Fellow Eagle Glassheim will share with us his thoughts on and problems with "Teaching Climate Change."

The group will discuss the following questions:

  1. What sorts of intellectual tools are useful in thinking about the contemporary challenges posed by climate change?
  2. What are our values and how should they inform our responses to climate change?  Do we want to encourage adaptation?  Conservation?  Anti-capitalism?  Anti-globalism?  Technological optimism or pessimism?  Skepticism? Put another way, what do we want our students to do with the knowledge we share with them?
  3. What sorts of material would be most useful in achieving these goals?  Historical examples of adaptation to climate change?  Of mal-adaptation?  A history of climate science?  A history of global environmentalism and environmental globalism?  A primer on the mechanics of climate change?

In sum, what do we want to teach and how can we do it most effectively?

The Climate Discusion Group is an open forum of and for people with an interest in climate change-related topics. It meets on a monthly basis to host a variety of activities, such as project presentations, guest lectures, discussions of literature, book presentations, etc.
