Wetlands
Workshop
04.08.2025 – 06.08.2025
Location: RCC, Munich, and a day trip to Nantesbuch, Bad Heilbrunn
Conveners: Paolo Gruppuso, Christof Mauch, Emily O’Gorman
Wetlands exist at the interface of land and water, representing sites of exceptional cultural and biological diversity. However, their hybrid nature has historically been a source of contention worldwide. Often dismissed as disease-ridden wastelands, wetlands have faced widespread drainage over the past three centuries, with degradation continuing today. Yet in recent decades, diverse kinds of people—including scientists, policy makers, environmentalists, and local communities—have recognized wetlands as crucial ecosystems for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Taking this as a point of departure, this symposium brings together an interdisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners who research wetlands across boundaries—from species to urban–wild interfaces and international conservation efforts—to examine the histories of these important places and explore their potential futures.
