Tuesday Discussion with Markus Kröll (IPA Fraunhofer Institute)

13.01.2026 16:30  – 17:45

Location: Rachel Carson Center, fourth floor, Conference Room, Leopoldstr. 11a, 80802 Munich, Germany

This Tuesday, Markus Kröll, head of business division “Sustainable Industries” at Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing, Engineering, and Automation (IPA), will join us for the Tuesday Discussion to talk about “Practical Pathways to Climate Neutrality for Industry and Commerce.”

Industry and commerce do not benefit from condemnation or from unchecked labels—they need robust, actionable solutions. In this talk Dr. Markus Kröll will show how Fraunhofer IPA develops and disseminates practice-oriented solutions via project formats, policy advice, and continuous dialogue with federal and regional ministries, municipalities, and stakeholder networks. From megatrends we derive concrete priorities and treat digitalization as a central lever—highlighting both its efficiency gains and its resource/energy trade-offs (e.g., AI, blockchain, data centers). Using project examples, I will demonstrate how waste heat from data centers can be usefully integrated, how circular economy and bio-based processes increase systemic resilience, and why business models must evolve to include sufficiency. The aim is a technology-neutral, science-based transfer into practice that uses innovation as the engine of transformation and connects all facets of sustainability. The talk includes also a discussion of the political and corporate frameworks needed to accelerate this transition.

The Tuesday Discussions are free and open to the public.
