Tuesday Discussion with Jonas Danen (ProEnviron / Bat Recovery Project)

14.10.2025 16:30  – 17:45

Location: Rachel Carson Center, fourth floor, Conference Room, Leopoldstr. 11a, 80802 Munich, Germany

This Tuesday, Jonas Danen (ProEnviron) will join us for the Tuesday Discussion with a talk on “The Mystery of Bats in the Grote of St. Bavokerk, Haarlem: Socio-Ecological Tensions in a Medieval Church.” The Bavochurch, built between 1370 and 1520, is one of the most important churches in the Netherlands and is, with over 120 000 annual visitors, one of the highlights in Haarlem. What barely any of those visitors know, though, is that it is not only a monument valued for its world-famous Baroque organ (played by Mozart and Händel), historic interior, and fifteenth-century architecture, but that it is also a monument for urban nature. In this talk, Jonas will discuss the population of bats that hibernates in the church, the problems this has brought with it, both for the bats and the church, and the research project (“Recovery of the Bat Colonies of the Grote of St. Bavokerk in Haarlem”) that was set up to find solutions for those problems.

The Tuesday Discussions are free and open to the public.
