August 2010

15.08.2010

Dear Friends of the Rachel Carson Center,

On August 1, the Rachel Carson Center celebrated its first birthday and the culmination of a very successful and promising first year.  Since last August, the RCC has been home to 19 Fellows from more than ten different countries.  We wish our outgoing Fellows all the best and look forward to an exciting autumn with our current Fellows.

  1. Daff beats heralded the official opening of the RCC at Munich’s Residenz on July 1. Distinguished keynote speakers Jane Carruthers, Yolanda Kakabadse, and Vandana Shiva were the highlights of an evening alive with global words, music and ideas.  To read about the night or see photos, click here.

  2. Is environmental history our best hope for the future? Leading environmental historians from four continents converged in Washington, D.C. from June 10-12 to discuss "Opportunities and Needs in Environmental History." The invitation-only workshop was sponsored by the RCC, National History Center, Center for the American West, and John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress.

  3. Carson Fellows meet Munich: Many Carson Fellows recently shared their work with the Munich community at the joint BAA - RCC conference entitled “Green Cultures: Environmental Knowledge, Climate, and Catastrophes.”

  4. Fostering scholars of the future: the RCC convened two doctoral summer schools in June – one on Natural Hazards and Disasters and one with a more general focus on Environmental History.

  5. What Does It Mean to Study World Environmental History?: RCC Director Christof Mauch gave this keynote lecture at the 1st International Workshop on the History of the Environment and Global Climate Change in Braga, Portugal.

  6. RCC Perspectives, a new, interdisciplinary series of papers and essays in environmental history, environmental studies, and related fields, is now available free for download on our website.

  7. Upcoming Events:
