Vandana Shiva on ''Excess as Capitalist Principle''

In her lecture, environmental activist, ecofeminist, and physicist Vandana Shiva will critique the concept of limitless growth as a fantasy of economists, businesses, and corporations. In her writings and in her political and social engagement, Shiva has been a staunch advocate of environmental justice and human dignity. She has emphasized that the value of life lies outside economic development; she has called for alternative ways of production and for policies and narratives that can end corporate hijacking of natural resources as well as excessive capital accumulation.

Vandana ShivaVandana Shiva is a leading figure in the anti-globalization movement. Trained as a physicist, she has been running the Research Foundation for Technolgoy and Ecology in Dehra Dun, India. She is the founder of Navdanya, a national movement to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources. Dr. Shiva has taught worldwide at universities and she has worked with peasants in rural India and elsewhere. Vandana Shiva is a recipient of the Alternative Nobel Prize; Forbes Magazine has identified her as one of the Seven Most Powerful Women on the Globe.

The lecture series, ''Excess,'' has been conceived by the cx centre for interdisciplinary studies at the Academy of Fine Arts. The RCC is cooperating on two lectures in the series.
