Irina Wenk on "Animals and Anthropology: Equines from an Ethnographer's Point of View"

Lunchtime Colloquium

16.10.2014 12:00  – 14:00

Location: Katholische Hochschulgemeinde (KHG), Leopoldstr. 11

Irina Wenk (Universität Zürich) will present on "Animals and Anthropology: Equines from an Ethnographer's Point of View"

What are animals doing in anthropology? In this talk, I reflect on how and why animals enter the discipline of anthropology and how anthropologists may deal with animals methodologically during their research. My focus is on equines and I will present two ethnographic examples of how horses may come into the ethnographer's research: one is the practice of horsefighting in the southern Philippines, the other the (re)making of baroque horses in Europe.

Wenk's presentation will be followed by a discussion with Julia Breittruck, Visiting Scholar Ursula Münster, Carson Fellow Harriet Ritvo, and Visiting Scholar Thom van Dooren.

The Lunchtime Colloquium is free and open to the public.

Snacks are served at 12:00; the lecture starts at 12:30.
