Deepwater Horizon: What Humanity Can Learn from the Gulf Oil Disaster

Lecture

04.10.2010

Location: Amerika Haus, Karolinenplatz 3, Munich

Frank Uekötter (RCC) gave a talk entitled ''Deepwater Horizon: What Humanity Can Learn from the Gulf Oil Disaster.'' The talk was in German.

Few environmental disasters have been subject to such intense public scrutiny as the explosion of the oil rig “Deepwater Horizon” on April 20 2010 and the subsequent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Six months after the event, this lecture attempted to draw some preliminary conclusions. The talk explored both the ostensible and the underlying causes, the reactions of companies, governments, and those affected, and will show how some groups have even profited from the disaster. The talk aimed to go beyond media clichés and give some deeper insights into an event which will certainly be a topic of discussion for some time to come.
