CHEERS (Cultural HEritagE. Risks and Securing activities) is a European project concerning the protection of cultural heritage sites that are exposed to environmental risks (natural disasters, climate change, etc.).
It has been recognized by the European Commission as a project contributing to the objectives of the European Year of Cultural Heritage.
THE STARTING POINT (WHY)
The Alps host an outstanding variety of material and immaterial cultural heritage which are key components of Alpine identity and strongly contribute to the local economies.
Natural disasters that affect Alpine territory, and which are likely to be exacerbated by climate change, represent a major threat to cultural heritage, in terms of asset safety and fruition. Risk assessment, hazard reduction, and disaster management focus attention on the protection of human lives and infrastructures, while the safeguard of cultural resources has not been properly addressed yet. The CHEERS project focuses on this gap.
THE OBJECTIVE (WHAT)
The project aims to enhance the protection of Alpine cultural resources, tackling the still neglected issue of the emergency management as well as possible damages due to natural hazards.
CHEERS will integrate know-how and on-field expertise in risk analysis, specifically addressing the cultural heritage conservation and valorization in emergency planning, supporting Alpine local communities in raising awareness and knowledge about the impact of natural risks on Cultural Heritage, and offering possible solutions to reduce the vulnerability of Cultural Assets.
RESULTS (HOW)
CHEERS will devise national and transnational tools, governance schemes, and intervention guidelines to reduce the vulnerability of Cultural Assets.

CHEERS (Cultural HEritagE. Risks and Securing activities) ist ein europäisches Projekt, in dem es um den Schutz von kulturellem Erbe geht, das Umweltrisiken ausgesetzt ist (Naturkatastrophen, Klimawandel etc.).
Es wurde als offizielles Projekt im Rahmen des Europäischen Jahrs des Kulturerbes anerkannt.
AUSGANGSPUNKT
Die Alpen verfügen über ein herausragend diverses Vermächtnis an materieller und immaterieller Kultur, welche die Basis der Identität der Alpenbevölkerung bildet sowie nachhaltig die lokale Wirtschaft stärkt.
Naturkatastrophen, die den Alpenraum belasten und höchstwahrscheinlich durch den Klimawandel weiter verschärft werden, stellen eine große Bedrohung für das kulturelle Erbe der Region und die Sicherheit der Kulturgüter dar.
Risikoabwägung, Gefahrenverringerung sowie Katastrophenmanagement richten den Fokus vorrangig auf den Schutz von menschlichem Leben und Infrastruktur, wohingegen die Sicherung kultureller Ressourcen bisher nicht angemessen gewürdigt wurde. CHEERS richtet seinen Fokus genau auf diese Lücke.
ZIEL
Das Projekt zielt darauf, den Schutz der kulturellen Ressourcen des Alpenraums zu verbessern indem es dem nach wie vor mangelhaften Katastrophen- und Notfallschutzmanagement der Natur entgegenwirkt. CHEERS wird Know-how, Feldforschung und Wissensbestände aus der Risikoanalyse nutzen, um insbesondere die Konservierung des kulturellen Erbes sicherzustellen und Planungen für den Notfall valorisieren, damit in den lokalen Gemeinschaften des Alpenraums das Bewusstsein für den Einfluss von Naturkatastrophen auf das kulturelle Erbe erhöht und mögliche Lösungen zur Verringerung der Vulnerabilität kultureller Güter erbracht werden können.
ERGEBNISSE
CHEERS wird Konzepte für nationale und transnationale Instrumente, staatliche Programme und Interventionsrichtlinien liefern, die die Vulnerabilität kultureller Güter reduzieren.
