On Monday, the RCC set out on an excursion to Berchtesgaden National Park. The day began with a meeting at the Haus der Berge with Dr. Roland Baier, the park's director. Dr. Baier provided an overview of the park's history, operations, and conservation efforts, highlighting its crucial role in regional and international environmental research.
Following this session, the group met Lisa Geres, a doctoral candidate researching life science systems at the Technical University of Munich, who led them to a picturesque overlook of the Königsee. The journey continued through the Klausbachtal, a valley within the park. Lisa brought them to numerous research sites to share the Park’s ongoing research on biodiversity and carrion. Participants learned about the species inhabiting the park, the ecological interactions sustaining its ecosystems, and the scientific methods used to monitor and protect wildlife populations. The hike granted the group a better understanding of the park's scientific endeavors and the complex ecosystem in Berchtesgaden National Park.
