Call for Applications: Coordinator of Graduate Programs

The Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society (RCC) is looking for a Coordinator of Graduate Programs to join its team. The position will start on 1 October 2023 (specific start dates are flexible) and runs through 30 September 2026. The RCC is an international research center dedicated to the study of environment and society from a wealth of different disciplines and international perspectives. It was founded in 2009 and is part of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich. The RCC runs fellowship programs and hosts numerous research projects. Its working language is English.

The RCC has three structured graduate programs: the MA program Environment and Society, the Environmental Studies Certificate Program for graduate students, and the Doctoral Program Environment and Society. Together, these create a community of close to two hundred students from a range of disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • Administration and coordination of the RCC’s graduate programs, primarily the certificate program and the doctoral program;
  • Teaching of two to three courses per semester in the RCC’s graduate programs;
  • Liaison with central university administration and various faculties as well as university professors and environmental practitioners;
  • Maintenance of student records, budget management, and website updating;
  • Leading excursions and residential workshops;
  • Promotion of graduate programs in Munich and beyond.

Qualifications

  • Preferably a PhD in environmental history, environmental anthropology, geography, environmental ethics, or a related discipline;
  • Fluency in both English and German;
  • Teaching experience;
  • Excellent communication and organization skills and the ability to work well in a team.

The RCC offers an attractive compensation package including a yearly gross salary of up to 70,000 Euros (based on the tariff contracts for public service, level E13, commensurate with experience) and 30 days of paid vacation. Working hours are flexible, and the RCC offers a family-friendly working environment. LMU can also assist, if necessary, with work permits and visas. As the candidate will be a state employee, they are required to have German health insurance and make contributions to the German tax and social-welfare system.
