New Book by Erika Bsumek

05.06.2023

Former Carson fellow, Erika Bsumek, recently published a new book with University of Texas Press titled The Foundations of Glen Canyon Dam: Infrastructures of Dispossession on the Colorado Plateau.

It describes the history and the economic importance of the second highest concrete-arch dam in the United States, the Glen Canyon Dam by the Colorado River, while highlighting both the Indigenous peoples' involvement in it, and the cultural structures and complex regional power dynamics behind it. In her book, Erika connects the story of the dam to the stories of religious settlers and Indigenous peoples, engineers and biologists, politicians and spiritual leaders to reveal a pattern of Indigenous erasure.
