New Book by Gregg Mitman

Empire of Rubber

02.08.2021

Gregg Mitman, head of the Rachel Carson Center’s Advisory Board and member of the Society of Fellows, published his new book Empire of Rubber: Firestone’s Scramble for Land and Power in Liberia (The New Press).

With Empire of Rubber, the historian and filmmaker Mitman provides a compelling historical account of the US Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. Firestone was founded in Liberia in 1926 and challenged British monopoly on rubber supplies. Scrutinizing the working conditions of the vast number of Liberian workers on the rubber plantations, Mitman's new book unmasks a world of social and ecological injustice, racial capitalism, and medical experimentation.
