Student Assistant

The Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society (RCC) is looking for a student assistant to work with Dr. Judith Bopp on her research project “Fostering the Health-Nutrition-Ecology Nexus: Organic Farming Practices and Household Resilience in Rural Bangladesh and Thailand,” for which she received a three-year research grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG). The position will run on a 7.5h/week contract for 12 months and will start on 1 September 2024, based at the RCC in Munich.

The three-year research project aims to discern how organic farming practices foster smallholder household resilience in Thailand and to develop the health-nutrition-ecology nexus enacted through farming.
The successful candidate will be responsible for a range of tasks related to the project’s research, such as:

  • project-related secondary data collection and literature research;
  • travel arrangements for field work;
  • assistance with post-field work data processing and curation, e.g. documentation of data and data format conversion;
  • transcription and translation of qualitative interviews, optionally AI-supported;
  • supervision and analysis of transcripts, supported by QDA software (coding, browsing, memo-writing, evaluating content);
  • literature curation;
  • assistance with proofreading project publications.

Candidates for this position must be enrolled at a German university and should be planning to stay enrolled as a student for at least one year beyond September 2024. Candidates should be able to work regularly at least one day per week.

Good command of the English language and an interest in Global South studies are required. Candidates need to be familiar with the common computer software such as word processing software, academic databases, reference managing, e.g. Zotero, and should be able to work independently. They will have the opportunity to prepare their bachelor‘s or master’s thesis within the project. The project also allows for the inclusion of the candidate’s own research and/or field work—at their own cost—if compatible with the project’s focus. The position also offers the opportunity to join conferences. Thai-speaking candidates are welcome.

The salary will be determined according to LMU’s compensation scale for “studentische Hilfskräfte.” The RCC is located in central Munich and offers a culturally diverse, family-friendly, and flexible working environment.
