Stefan Esselborn studied contemporary history, political science, and economic and social history at LMU Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität). He spent the academic year 2004–5 at the Université Paris IV – La Sorbonne in Paris, from which he received a Licence en Histoire, before returning to LMU, where he graduated with an MA in 2009. From 2005 to 2008, he worked as a student research assistant at LMU. He took up a position as a research assistant at the Rachel Carson Center in October 2009, combining this with a position as tutor for historical methods in the Department of Contemporary History at  LMU. For his dissertation project, entitled “Translating Africa to Modernity: The International African Institute 1925–1975,” he received a scholarship from the German Historical Institute London in 2010.
