New RCC Supported Anthology Published

Julia Herzberg and Colleagues Announce a New Publication

14.06.2013

The anthology Umweltgeschichte(n): Ostmitteleuropa von der Industrialisierung bis zum Postsozialismus [Environmental History(ies): Central Eastern Europe from Industrialization to Post-Socialism], edited by Carson Research Fellow Julia Herzberg, Horst Förster, and Martin Zückert has recently been published. A collaboration of the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society and the Collegium Carolinum, the anthology arose from the 2010 conference “Humans and Environment: Environmental History as Eastern European Regional History from Industrialization to Post-Socialism.”

In a mix of German and English essays, the contributions in this volume ask whether the relationship between humans and nature has a constitutive character for historical regions such as Central Eastern Europe. Keeping postindustrial developments and the consequences of past political events in mind, the authors discuss issues of land use, the perception of landscapes, the impact of infrastructure developments, and nature conservation.
