Visualizing the Environment
A Report on the Recent Environmental Photography Workshop
02.12.2024
The RCC Environmental Photography Workshop, held from 22–24 November 2024 at Studienhaus Gut Schönwag, was centered on the theme ‘How to Visualize the Environment.’ Led by Dr. Anna-Maria Walter and featuring guest instructor Dr. Alison Pouliot, an ecologist, author, and environmental photographer, participants explored techniques to create impactful and intentional photographs.
A key focus of the workshop was the importance of intentionality in photography, with an emphasis on storytelling over casual memory documentation. Pouliot encouraged participants to concentrate on capturing actions, events or transformations, and recommended beginning with mindful observation before taking pictures.
During the workshop, participants embarked on observation walks to sharpen their visual perception. The images that resulted were then analyzed and constructively critiqued in feedback sessions. In addition to the focus on visualizing the environment, students also engaged in exercises that stimulated other senses including touch, taste, smell, and hearing.
For anyone interested in improving their photography skills, the online student magazine Die Kulturschock features an article on Dr. Alison Pouliot’s tips and tricks.
