New Books Published by Amelia Fiske and Jonas Fischer

16.05.2024

RCC Alumna Amelia Fiske and artist Jonas Fischer, who have previously been published in Springs: The Rachel Carson Center Review, have recently published their joint effort, the graphic novel Toxic: A Tour of the Ecuadorian Amazon. The book, from which an excerpt, titled “Crude Encounters,” was published in the October 2023 issue of Springs, draws on extensive research and fieldwork conducted by Fiske in the Ecuadorian Amazon on “toxic tours” through places contaminated by oil operations and follows three fictional characters on such a tour through toxic sites in the Amazon. The novel is the result of Fiske’s time as a visiting scholar at the RCC in 2017–18 and a cooperation with artist Jonas Fischer.

In addition, Amelia Fiske has recently published another book, Reckoning with Harm: The Toxic Relations of Oil in Amazonia. This ethnographic analysis explores the harmful consequences of oil extraction in the Ecuadorian Amazon over the past fifty years.

The RCC would like to congratulate Amelia Fiske and Jonas Fischer on their enlightening and beautiful publications.
