07.06.2022

The Atomic Archipelago: US Nuclear Submarines and Technopolitics of Risk in Cold War Italy is the title of the new book by Davide Orisini, who is a Marie Skłodowska Curie Fellow at the RCC. Atomic Archipelago is a historical ethnography of the US Navy’s nuclear submarine base in the Archipelago of La Maddalena, Sardinia, Italy, set up in 1972 and closed in 2008. Orsini explores the understanding of nuclear submarines among the Navy personnel, local residents and administrators, experts, and politicians. The work analyzes nuclear knowledge in Italy along with the difficulty to grasp the nature of nuclear submarines due to their invisibility and mobility.
