New Book by Thomas Lekan

Our Gigantic Zoo: A German Quest to Save the Serengeti

27.01.2020

RCC fellow Thomas Lekan has released a new book: Our Gigantic Zoo: A German Quest to Save the Serengeti (Oxford University Press).

Thomas recounts the birth of the internationally renowned conservation site, the Serengeti National Park. Using archival material from Germany, Tanzania, and the United States, he highlights the transnational beginnings of conservation during the era of decolonization and introduces Bernhard Grzimek, the most significant European conservationist of the twentieth century, who brought the natural world to English-speaking audiences via television broadcasts.

The RCC was pleased to support Thomas’s research towards this book during a previous RCC fellowship.
