RCC Director Christof Mauch Awarded International Planetary Award

Chosen by the "Design Me a Planet" Initiative

15.09.2015

On 18 June 2015, Christof Mauch was awarded the 2015 international Planetary Award from the "Design Me a Planet" Initative as part of the "Tage der Zukunft" (Days of the Future), held at the Cloister Arnoldstein in Austria.

Mauch was chosen for his "engagement in world environment history and sustainability research." In his laudatio, Prof. Michel Saloff-Coste (Université Catholique de Lille) praised Mauch for both his publications as well as his research initiatives. He stated that Mauch has changed the "software in our heads" through his leadership of the Rachel Carson Center as well as the European Society for Environmental History so that humans now think in more international and interdisciplinary ways. These types of organizations are of utmost importance for the survival of humanity in the future. Saloff-Coste called the programs at the RCC an "ecosystem of innovation." In his acceptance speech, Mauch thanked the organization for the award, but also said that the entire team at the RCC had earned the accolades.

The Planetary Award is awarded every two years at different locations in Austria in three different categories (regional, national, and international).
