Silent Spring Essay Contest

And the winners are...

The Rachel Carson Center is delighted to announce the winners of the Silent Spring Essay Contest. Co-sponsored by the British Council, the International Consortium of Environmental History Organizations, and the Consulate General of the United States, Munich, this contest was launched to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, a book considered to have launched the modern American environmental movement and to have influenced similar movements around the world.

Two prizes were on offer to authors who wrote on a topic related to Carson’s Silent Spring in an approachable and provocative style, very much in the spirit of Carson’s own writing. The contest demonstrated how Carson’s book has resonated across the globe, with more than fifty entries from almost twenty countries spread across both the hemispheres.

After lengthy deliberation, the jury has awarded the senior prize to Joan Maloof, for her essay “Rachel Carson's Daughter.”

The junior prize has been awarded to Akrish Adhikari for his essay “Carson Survives Through The Silent Spring.”

Both of these essays will be published in full in a special anniversary edition of the RCC Perspectives scheduled for autumn 2012. This volume will also contain the work of several contest entrants whose essays were highly commended by the jury. Authors selected for publication will be contacted by the RCC in the summer.

The Rachel Carson Center and its co-sponsors would like to congratulate both the two winners and all of those who submitted essays. The breadth and range of the contributions was a wonderful tribute to Rachel Carson and has given us an exciting portrait of the people and projects she has inspired across the globe.
