Carson Professor Markus Vogt Founds New Institute

Environmental Center in Uzhgorod, Ukraine

In January 2011, Markus Vogt founded a new center for the environment and the ethical use of resources at the Uzhgorod State University in Ukraine. The institute is sponsored by the Deutsche Bundesstifung Umwelt (DBU); there are seven paid staff and eleven volunteers. Dr. Alexander Bokotei heads up the institute.

The center focuses on collecting, evaluating, and translating literature on the environment with a special focus on environmental ethics, the church and the environment, conservation, and sustainable energy development for Eastern Europe. The center offers weekly trainings for employees of public agencies in the Transcarpathian region. In addition, the center also sponsors international conferences.

Partners for the institute include the Institute for Chemistry and Biology at the Uzhgorod State University; the Commission for Ecology and Tourism of the Ukrainian Roman Catholic Conference of Bishops; the Center for Ecology of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Iwano Frankiwsk; and the Public Administration for Environmental Protection in the Transcarpathian region.
