Prof. Dr. Rebecca Potter

Visiting Scholar

Rebecca Potter is an associate professor of English studies, and affiliated faculty of Sustainability, Energy, and the Environment at the University of Dayton in Ohio, USA. She received her Bachelor's degree from the University of California, Davis, and her PhD from Brandeis University. She is currently a visiting scholar funded by the DAAD. Her current project, The Cassandra Effect, uses a narrative approach to understand the public response to the issue of climate change. Drawing upon familiar stories, such as Shakespeare's Hamlet, Defoe's Robinson Crusoe and of course the tale of Cassandra, the study compares narratives of doubt, uncertainty, risk, skepticism and denial to the trenchant challenges facing scientists and activists when educating the public about climate change and its impacts.
