RCC Newsletter, Issue 01

June 2010

17.06.2010

Dear Friends of the Rachel Carson Center:

Welcome to the first edition of the RCC newsletter. We hope you will enjoy being kept up to date on our events and projects.

RCC Opening Event: Distinguished keynote speakers Vandana Shiva (World Future Councillor), Yolanda Kakabadse (President of WWF International), and Jane Carruthers (Professor of Environmental History) will be launching the RCC in global style at the Residenz München on July 1. For more information on the program, click here. Your invitation is attached. We hope to see many of you there!

Environmental Studies Online: The RCC is designing a digital resource that aims to make a wide-ranging collection of materials accessible worldwide and also deepen public understanding of environmental issues.  In March 2010, the Center hosted two lively workshops to talk about best practices with international experts who are creating interesting or successful digital projects in environmental studies and related fields. Click here for photos and a full report.

RCC Expertise Helps Power Exhibition Success: “Discoveries 2010: Energy” features RCC’s first public exhibition, on the island of Mainau.

We are pleased to announce the launch of RCC Perspectives, a series of occasional papers and essays in environmental studies and related fields. Rooted in the scholarly activities of the Rachel Carson Center and in current debates in society, Perspectives contributes fresh empirical research and provocative thought pieces aiming to further international dialogue on the complex relationship between nature and culture. Check out the first contributions here.

Upcoming Events: Mark your calendars for the upcoming conference on “Green Cultures: Climate – Knowledge – Catastrophes,” July 8 - 10 at the Amerika Haus, Munich.  This conference is sponsored by the Bavarian American Academy and features former Undersecretary of the United Nations, Klaus Töpfer, among others. Many RCC Fellows will be presenting their research.

We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events – especially the Opening Event on July 1!

Best wishes,

The Rachel Carson Center
