International Curatorial Fellowship

The Deutsches Museum (Munich, Germany)is offering an International Curatorial Fellowship for its special exhibition “Anthropocene – Nature and Technology in the Age of Humans,” scheduled to open in fall 2014. The 18 month-fellowship is funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation (Kulturstiftung des Bundes) in the “International Museum Fellowship” program.

The exhibition is a joint venture of the Deutsches Museum and the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society. Founded in 1903, the Deutsches Museum is one of the most important museums of science and technology worldwide with a total of 73,000 square meters of exhibition space and almost 1.4 million visitors each year. The RCC is an international, interdisciplinary research institute, founded in 2009 as a joint initiative of LMU Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität) and the Deutsches Museum. It aims to advance research and discussion concerning the interaction between human agents and nature, and to strengthen the role of the humanities in current political and scientific debates about the environment.

With the help of the international fellow, the Deutsches Museum aims at including intercultural, global aspects into the exhibition and incorporating international presentation and education approaches. As a member of the exhibition team, the fellow will be involved in all stages of the conceptualization, planning and realization of the exhibition. According to his/her expertise, s/he will be responsible for an individual subsection of the exhibit. Other potential tasks will be the conceptualization of educational programs and initiating and coordinating collaborations with international partners, particularly with the goal of identifying potential venues for an international tour of the exhibit.

The fellow will be associated both with the Deutsches Museum and the RCC and will be mentored by Prof. Dr. Helmuth Trischler, head of research at the Deutsches Museum and Co-Director of the RCC. The fellow is invited to participate in the diverse programs and events of both institutions and to present his/her work in workshops and publications. The fellow will further participate in the German Federal Cultural Foundation’s “Academy Program,” including workshops across Germany, colloquia, and a concluding event. The fellow will also be offered to take German classes at the Goethe Institut.

We are looking for a candidate at the interface of natural sciences and humanities with experiences both in academic research and museum work. The candidate must hold a university degree (preferably PhD) in a field relevant to the topics of the Anthropocene (natural sciences or humanities/museum studies) and document interest and prior experience in interdisciplinary work aimed at the participatory communication of science and technology to the public (e.g. via Public Understanding of Science and Humanities activities, exhibits, work in a NGO). Native-level English competency and computer literacy are required. Knowledge of German would be advantageous.

We particularly encourage applications from Asian and African countries. The position is full-time and runs for 18 months. Preferred start of the fellowship is 1 October 2012. The fellow will enter a contract with the Deutsches Museum with a gross salary of 3,500 Euros/month. As the candidate will be a state employee, s/he is required to have German health insurance and to pay into the German tax and social welfare system. The Goethe Institut and the Museum will assist the fellow with necessary paperwork such as work permits and visas, if necessary.
