Cultivating the Right to Food in Community Gardens in Berlin and Rio de Janeiro

Speak4Nature Seminar Series

25.03.2025 15:00  – 16:30

Location: conference room, fourth floor, RCC

Presenter: Felipe Jardim

Moderator: Jonatan Palmblad

Join this Speak4Nature seminar with Landhaus Fellow Felipe Jardim for an insightful presentation exploring how community gardens address urban food and land challenges in Berlin and Rio de Janeiro. This study investigates the connection between food sharing practices and the human right to food, analyzing how these gardens repurpose vacant land and combat socioeconomic disparities. Through interviews and questionnaires with 40 participants, the research reveals that while Berlin’s gardens prioritize socialization and environmental concerns, Rio de Janeiro’s focus is on food security and social sustainability. Notably, agroecological food production unites both cities in a commitment to sustainable practices. This presentation will delve into the similarities and differences in food sharing activities, demonstrating how community gardens contribute to various dimensions of the right to food and offer a pathway towards social-ecological transformation.

No registration is needed to attend this seminar. If you would like to attend online, however, please register here.
